ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the relationship between sexual identity and religious and/or spiritual identity for gay and lesbian clients using two structured activities: the circle of self and a writing task. It presents a case example of twenty-nine-year-old Sarah, who entered therapy with anxiety issues. During the fifth session, the therapist presented Sarah with the idea of using the circle of self activity. Sarah's resulting circle included many factors: gender, religion, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, and age. The therapist encouraged Sarah to reflect on the process and her reactions to the task, as well as to discuss the content of her writing. Sarah stated that while the task had been challenging, she had found relief and clarity in reflecting upon those times in her life. The majority of Americans are raised in families where religious beliefs are present, and it can be assumed that religion has had an impact on the lives of many in the gay and lesbian community.
