ABSTRACT

This activity will help gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) clients balance career needs with the expression of their sexual orientation.

Rationale for Use As GLB-advocacy efforts for equity move forward, the workplace is now the targeted focus

(Gore, 2000). In order to benefit from workplace equity policies, GLB job candidates and current employees must be out in the workplace. This puts GLB employees in the very difficult position of deciding between coming out in the workplace or staying in the closet. To be considered in this decision is the reality of heterosexism in the workplace. Heterosexism is “social disadvantage designed to enforce ‘traditional’ cultural values that include negative stereotypes of homosexuality . . .” (Gore, 2000, p. 284). Exacerbating this issue is the fact that GLB people constitute a hidden minority group that does not necessarily receive public compassion for its struggles.
