ABSTRACT

The goal of this activity is to help gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) clients make decisions about how to have friendships with ex-partners.

Rationale for Use As a result of being marginalized by their families of origin due to their sexual orientation,

having a need for a role model and social support within the GLB communities, and needing help in maintaining positive GLB identities, GLB individuals typically create a family of choice (Bepko and Johnson, 2000; Nardi, 1982; Nardi and Sherrod, 1994; Weston, 1997). These chosen families serve similar functions as would families of origin in terms of providing support, rituals, caregiving, and spaces for holiday gatherings. Without these families, GLB people can feel isolated and alone.
