ABSTRACT
The year 1948 saw the formation of the state of Israel on a substantial part of land known as Palestine. A total of 780,000 Palestinians were displaced, some of whom came to live as refugees in the West Bank and Gaza, areas that were controlled by Jordan and Egypt respectively. Others were dispersed in the Diaspora to Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and elsewhere.
