ABSTRACT

This chapter is primarily addressed to the psychotherapist contemplating individual work; however, some of what we say will also be relevant in the group setting. The chapter is in three main parts: context, treatment and themes. We begin with context, as this client group has a particular context, historically, culturally and within the family, out of which they have grown. Knowing something about this context can be of help clinically. We then move on to treatment. This section is to give general advice to the prospective psychotherapist and to consider communication with learning-disabled patients. In the third and final section we pick out particular themes and concepts that we have found useful and that commonly arise.
