ABSTRACT
The human mind can be regarded metaphorically as a complex disambiguation machine characterized in some moments by intentionality. Its ‘output’ in action and expression depends on conditions of operation, ‘programs’ and ‘input’. Many of the conditions of operation and much of the ‘output’ leave traces in the archaeological record. However, the programs and aspects of the input are much less directly observable. They constitute a ‘black box’ problem for archaeology.
