ABSTRACT

T he Deep Image movement is a study in the fluidity and am-biguity of poetry movements in general. Their outlines are clear only to historians; for those in the actual moment of their happening, a movement is diaphanous, a function of friendships, shared geography, or momentary common interests, but always with a residue of hard reality and some important cultural content. It is also likely that a movement confirms the power of an aesthetic to enter into the politics and social activism of a time and thus can act as a shield or banner for the writer's cause.
