ABSTRACT
R ita Dove has brought African-American expression into themainstream of American poetry. Her own family history of early 20th-century migration from the rural South to industrial Akron became an exemplary journey affirming black entitlement to the American dream in her Pulitzer Prize-winning poem, Thomas and Beulah (1986). Dove has continued to position civil rights as essential to the cultural freedoms of all Americans.
