ABSTRACT

Thinking of the Lost World "Thinking of the Lost World" appears as the last poem in The Lost World (1965), Randall jarrell's final volume of poetry, published shortly before his death in 1965. The poem is the companion piece to the longer "The Lost World," also written in 1963; a reading of the longer poem enhances an understanding of the shorter, since the two share numerous images. In Remembering Randall (1999), her memoir of her husband, Mary von Schrader jarrell says:

For Randall 1963 was the time to write his long, autobiographical poem, The Lost World. . . . At just this time Randall's mother sent him an old Christmas card box from the twenties containing the letters he had written her from California when he was twelve.
