ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the issues involved in career development and counseling with 1/g clients and suggests how counselors can better address the needs of this population. Ruth E. Fassinger, C. Hetherington et al., and W. Paul perceived lesbians and gay men as a “nonethnic” minority. R. Buhrke, Buhrke and L. Douce, and J. Norton pointed out the value in educational programs of using lesbian and gay problems as illustrative cases of counseling concerns. Employment discrimination is a reality for 1/g clients. Discrimination acts to isolate 1/g people in certain professions. E. Herr and S. Cramer reviewed the theoretical perspectives related to the development of career behavior and choice with respect to the age of the client. Lesbian women and gay men comprise a unique cultural minority in this country with the attendant problems of minority status. In addition to the problems encountered with prejudice from society at large, they encounter similar problems from the counseling community.
