ABSTRACT

This chapter suggests a nonverbal exercise that adds a new dimension to getting to know others in a short time period. It spices up introductions and brings many surprises to the group. By expressing themselves to each other, better awareness and understanding can develop among the group or family members. It helps to increase self-awareness, and increase assertiveness skills. Have participants make up their own movement statements and let others guess what mood or feeling they are trying to portray. A variety of music may be played during this exercise. If participants are feeling uncomfortable, the trainer should initiate the exercise by demonstrating movements to some of the attached movement/feeling statements. Alternative methods of expression are important for individuals to assert themselves. This exercise helps become more expressive and more comfortable in expressing oneself.
