ABSTRACT
Self-help is a young concept in the New Provinces (former East Germany) of the Federal Republic of Germany. The development of self-help groups or organizations in one of the provinces is detailed, with emphasis on the work of an institution playing the role of a clearinghouse. This is an occasion to witness the birth of such a movement in a society experiencing a radical transformation from a socialist ethos to a free-market orientation.
