ABSTRACT

In preparing this volume, we have tried to explore all of the aspects of biological theories of sexual preference. The issues involved have a vibrant history, are wide-ranging, and remain the objects of much controversy. In our first section, we start with discussions of the history of the biological theories and sociocultur-al concepts of gender and sexuality. The next three sections deal with three specialized areas of biological science and related issues: genetics and evolution, hormones and the endocrine system, and brain physiology and structure. A final section deals with social stigma, science, and medicine. Each of these sections is briefly introduced by an explanation of the key concepts and terms that you will find in that section. In addition, we have included a glossary at the end of the volume.
