Thank you, Mr. President. This is a very important piece of legislation. It’s often easy to preface a bill that you carry by saying it’s an important piece of legislation but this one is. This one is because, quite frankly-it might shock some to hear me say this-this is the most important civil rights issue that we have before us in 1984. It’s the most important civil rights issue because of the process of elimination. We have to this day eliminated discrimination against people because of race, religion, age, sex, disability, and today we have a large group of Californians who are petitioning us to eliminate job discrimination against them because of sexual preference.
