ABSTRACT
This speech was delivered by Representative Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) to the Log Cabin Republicans in Los Angeles on March 7, 1997. It reviews the events leading to his coming out as an openly gay member of Congress and subsequent career impacts. Bruce Bawer was a poet and neoconservative journalist, author of A Place at the Table:The Gay Individual in American Society (Poseidon Press, 1993) and Beyond Queer: Challenging Gay Left Orthodoxy (Free Press, 1996).
