ABSTRACT

Whitlock, at the time of this speech, was Chair of the National Organization for Women Lesbian Rights Committee in summer 1978 at the Gay and Lesbian Pride Rally in New York City. The quotation she uses is from the opening pages of Lillian Hellman's 1976 work on the McCarthy era, Scoundrel Time. Hellman herself was called before the House Un-American Activities Commitee in 1952, and Scoundrel Timeconveys the atmosphere of ideological persecution of those days well.
