Reverend Larry Uhrig at this time was a leading pastor at the Metropolitan Community Church in the Washington, DC, area. In 1984, the year after this letter was written, his guide to same-sex unions, Two of Us, was published by Alyson Press. Hickey was the conservative Catholic archbishop of Washington. In addition to the indicated recipients, the full text of the letter was printed in The Washington Blade on April 22, 1983.
