ABSTRACT
Assessing Schachter's influence on my career seems to require imagining how my career might have proceeded without Schachter's influence. This task is beyond me. Schachter's influence on me has been so enormous that all I can realistically do is attempt to describe the ways in which my work, in substance and style, is patterned on his. And to begin with, maybe I can try to explain why his particular influence on me has been so disproportionate.
