ABSTRACT

A distinguishing feature of Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS) is its adaptability to a wide variety of settings and a corresponding diversity of methods and purposes of application. In this chapter, a special effort has been made to select instructive and representative examples that span the range of current and past implementations. Many of these examples have been obtained by means of personal communication and review of unpublished literature and therefore they are generally unavailable elsewhere. The examples come from many fields; for example, education, medicine, vocational rehabilitation, mental health, social services, and various forms of counseling. For each application, we have provided information on service setting, administrative level of application (client, program unit, program-wide, state-wide, etc.), and purpose (as a counseling tool, for administrative guidance and control, for a research study, as a demonstration, etc.). Each example includes illustrative content, clinical and other commentary on the application, and highlighting of instructive features.
