ABSTRACT

Over the years, little material has been published that would assist in the training of skills necessary to use Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS). Cytrynbaum and his colleagues (Cytrynbaum, Ginath, Birdwell, & Brandt, 1979) reported that success or failure in implementing GAS seemed to depend in part on the ability of goal setters to develop appropriate and realistic Goal Attainment Follow-Up Guides. In their review they found few reports on the use of GAS that described how the staff were trained or what level of skill was required to effectively employ the method. In this chapter some techniques and principles for training goal setters are presented that have been found to be effective.
