ABSTRACT

Brewer's dual-process model of impression formation distinguishes between categorization, or “typing,” and what she terms “personalization.” The first process identifies someone as a particular “type” of person, a member of a larger group, and the second identifies the person as an individual. In our opinion, Brewer's model organizes many of the phenomena of social cognition in a provocative way. We nonetheless take issue with her particular view of social categorization.
