ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to present a conceptual framework within which the hitherto disparate topics of thinking research may be interrelated, and within which a general theory may be developed. The mental modelling approach in psychology postulates that useful theories of cognitive processes will result if it is assumed that people interpret the world in terms of symbolic models. Although the study of thinking is receiving increased attention from psychologists, educationalists, and cognitive scientists, it is widely perceived as a potpourri of isolated topics such as deductive reasoning, problem solving, concept learning, creative processes, undirected thinking, etc. The mental modelling approach in psychology postulates that useful theories of cognitive processes will result if it is assumed that people interpret the world in terms of symbolic models. Model formation occurs during information gathering, whether it be by perception, reading, conversation, or some other route.
