ABSTRACT

This chapter extends the investigation of the Non-ah speech disturbances in three ways. First, it is a second experimental study in which the anxiety of the speaker is sytematically manipulated and the variations in speech disturbance level are observed. The other comparable study was that reported in the preceding chapter. Again, the subjects are male. In the present study, control of the atmosphere of the interview (evaluative-permissive) and the types of questions (positive, negative, or neutral in affective direction) were used to alter the anxiety level of chronically “high” and “low” anxious subjects. Second, the study extends the range of speakers from adults to children. And, third, this study is the first one to attempt a systematic investigation into the interaction of characterological anxiety levels of speakers and experimentally varied, mild anxiety-provoking procedures.
