ABSTRACT

This is the second chapter concerned with the relationship of the Non-ah speech disturbances described in chapter 9 and manifest verbal content. We are interested in this topic on two counts. First, it bears on our working hypothesis, presented in chapter 8, that nonlexical extralinguistic features of speech provide more useful measures of the emotional state of the speaker than does the manifest verbal content. Secondly, the study of this relationship can contribute to the understanding of the speech disturbance phenomena themselves. Extending this understanding is just as important as is the methodological issue about the measurement of the speaker’s emotional state.
