ABSTRACT

The human face is an enormously important source of information; from it we determine age, sex, race, intention, mood, and well-being. All this is done at a glance and is achieved even for unfamiliar faces. Familiar faces allow still greater possibilities. They evoke a range of associations and, as we shall see, are dealt with differently from unfamiliar faces. The importance of faces is certain, but our concern is to decide whether they are a unique form of visual input.
