ABSTRACT

Having been a Professor at the University which serves as the host for this symposium, and being one who wishes to be cordial to both foreign visitors and scientists working in a research area of interest to me, I want to be cautious in my criticisms of the work just described. However, being among my colleagues of the Institute of Child Development and Department of Psychology, I must be aware of the disfavor that would be assigned to me if I were to be an uncritical reader. Simply applauding Rubin and Krasnor’s paper would leave me in local disrepute. Thus, while I want to be a critical and provocative discussant, I also wish to avoid the unseemly acrimony that I find so distasteful. I have a problem, a social problem. How am I going to solve it?
