ABSTRACT
A recurring theme in speech perception is the enormous variability one encounters in the acoustic signal. Yet listeners appear able to move beyond this surface variability and retrieve a level of representation which consists of a smaller number of more abstract and perceptually constant elements; moreover, this is done with apparent case.
