In a sense, there is only one problem of psychophysics, namely, the definition of the stimulus. In this same sense there is only one problem in all of psychology – and it is the same problem… The complete definition of the stimulus… involves the specification of all the transformations of the environment, both internal and external, that leave the response invariant (Stevens, 1951, p. 31).
