ABSTRACT

This paper describes a computer model of the acquisition of comprehension abilities by a child between the ages of one and two years. The model learns to carry out imperatives at the age two level, beginning with the kind of knowledge the child was observed to have at age one, learning mechanisms which can plausibly be imputed to him at age one, and being given the kind of language experiences he was observed to have between age one and two. The observations, the program, and the relationship of the model to certain psychological data are described.
