ABSTRACT

I originally intended to limit my review of the literature on the language of the mentally retarded to the period from 1974 to the present, in order to avoid overlap with the work of such earlier reviewers as Cromer (1974), Rosenberg (1970), Schiefelbusch (1974), and Yoder and Miller (1972). It turned out not to be possible to limit myself in this fashion, however. Thus I had to examine, albeit selectively, the earlier literature in the course of examining the more recent work.
