ABSTRACT

The plan for the chapter involves: (1) dicussion of the terms deaf and language development in order to define the population and the problem with which we are concerned; (2) discussion of the present language status of deaf students to indicate the nature and extent of the language problem; (3) discussion of language development in deaf children through ASL, manual English, and oral English; and (4) a brief conclusion. Presentation of literature in the chapter is selective and is meant to be representative of issues and processes being discussed rather than exhaustive.
