ABSTRACT

It has been observed repeatedly since the time of Hippocrates that damage to the brain can result in a disturbance of language capacities. In fact, most of the clinical forms of aphasia were described in detail prior to 1880 (Benton & Joynt, 1960). Despite this early interest in the topic, it was a discovery by Paul Broca reported around 1865 that marks the beginning of the study of aphasia in its present form.
