The Political Economy of Higher Education for Older Learners

As early as the late 1800s, social scientists such as Emile Durkheim sought to examine the role of education in society. It was not until the 1940s, however, that rigorous scholarly research was conducted on the function of education in the larger society. This work was conducted concerning issues in public schools (both elementary and secondary), in private schools, and in higher education.
