ABSTRACT

I want to say first of all that it is a great pleasure for me to comment on Dr. Watzlawick’s paper because I considered him my teacher in the 1960s in California. He gave me my first job in the United States as his research assistant. I must say, though, that it was a volunteer job. But I published two papers out of that project at the Mental Research Institute, and I will always remember Dr. Watzlawick’s encouragement and confidence in my intelligence. Looking back now, I realize that I was 26 years old then and incredibly naive and presumptuous. I thought I knew everything and Paul, in his unique restrained kindness, not only never told me that I didn’t know anything, but he helped me to believe that I actually had something to say and that I could make a contribution.
