ABSTRACT

Many psychotherapists and perhaps most psychoanalysts are inclined to become so attached (dare we say cathected) to their favorite theories and techniques that they display an ossified and, at times, hostile defensiveness to any criticisms or suggestions of change. It is only the truly great thinkers, in my view, who have both the cognitive capacity and the affective courage to remain flexible and open to new ideas. Dr. Marmor, according to these and other criteria, stands out as an exceptional contributor to knowledge. Of course, anyone who pays tribute to my “virtuosity” is automatically a perspicacious and enlightened commentator of unquestioned distinction!
