ABSTRACT

To examine the contribution of cross-sex supervision to the development of the analytic candidate, it would be useful to keep in mind the task of the analyst. Loewald (1980) states that the analyst, like a sculptor, must possess the ability to see the “core” of the patient in order to bring out the particular patient's innate capabilities. In doing this, the analyst needs to be able to see correctly the patient's current developmental level plus maintain a sense of perspective encompassing the patient's potential development. In doing so, the analyst needs to avoid molding the patient in his/her own image or imposing on the patient his/her own concept of what the patient is to become.
