ABSTRACT

The Mental Research Institute (MRI) Interactional View (IV) is based on a systemic circular epistemology derived from cybernetic theory. IV focuses on the processes of communication within human systems. In 1979, Carol Wilder sent Gregory Bateson a copy of her article The Palo Alto Group: Difficulties and Directions of the Interactional View for Human Communication Research for his comments. Any theory that attempted to set a different epistemological course has been obliged to address the popular psychoanalytic epistemology. In the literature of Individual Psychology and of the Interactional View there are extended references assaulting cause-effect thinking. An Adlerian would feel comfortable with the concept of equifinality. From the teleological perspective, multiple strategies may be employed to move toward the same goal. For example, one may move toward a goal of superiority by becoming expert, oppressing others, and achieving true humility. The list could continue, being limited only by human creativity.
