ABSTRACT

The cluster of symptoms involved in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is delineated in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (American Psychiatric Association, 1980), and its clinical manifestation among combat veterans has been described by various authors, such as Figley (1978) among many others. One central aspect of the symptomatology of PTSD is anxiety arousal. Behavioral approaches in the assessment and treatment of this aspect of post-traumatic stress disorder have been shown to be useful and effective. Malloy, Fairbank, and Keane (1983) and Blanchard, Kolb, Pallmeyer, and Gerardi (1982) found differential patterns of physiological arousal for Vietnam combat veterans and noncombat veterans.
