Assertive Training is based on the assumption that effective communication is a learned behavior. Using a behaviorial frame of reference, assertive training focuses on common everyday situations (i,e, being shortchanged, dealing with "putdowns," making and refusing requests, etc.), It assists patients in examining interpersonal rights (l.e, right to say no, right to change your rnlnd, the right to privacy, etc.), and the consequences of behavior. It provides an opportunity for exploration and practice of alternative methods of coping effectively with conflicts of everyday living in order to decrease anxiety and improve self-concept.
