ABSTRACT

The purpose of this intervention is to produce a second order change in the parents' perception of their disciplinary techniques. This second order change is accomplished through reframing. Reframing is defined as changing the conceptual and/or emotional setting or viewpoint in relation to which a situation is experienced and placing it in another frame that fits the facts of the situation equally well or even better. As a result, the entire meaning of the situation is changed (Watzlawick, Weakland, & Fisch, 1974, p. 95). Reframing operates on the level of metareality where change in the perception of the event takes place without changing the event itself. Thus, if the reframe is successful, the event will be seen as a member of a different category or class. Because it is perceived differently, the individual can respond to the situation differently.
