ABSTRACT

This chapter provides that the group and conceptualize of the major variables which determine the consequences of professional guidance provided by supervision. Both supervision and direct practice decision making processes are influenced by various elements which sometimes have an unpredictable effect. The four key concepts which emerge from this definition are: event; perception of the event; Resources to meet the event; and effective change. Supervision of a therapist's process can be defined as the professional guide facilitating the practitioner's perception of a stress-causing event in the client's life in the most objective manner to enable the most appropriate mobilization of both therapist and client's resources with the aim of bringing about effective change. This is an ideal definition of a supervisory task. The ideal terms by which this definition is phrased are exposed to subjectiveness, instances of inappropriateness and situations where the change obtained is neither desirable nor effective.
