ABSTRACT

Despite criticisms and cautions (e.g., Ennis & Litwack, 1974; Goldzband, 1982; Wells, 1983) mental health professionals are becoming more involved in the legal process. A significant number of psychologists and psychiatrists regularly appear in court as expert witnesses and are generally well prepared for their foray into the adversarial process. However, regardless of educational level, for family therapists who come to court because they were involved in a treatment situation that later ended up in litigation, offering courtroom testimony can be frightening and bewildering if unprepared. It is to these uninitiated first-timers that this paper is directed.
