ABSTRACT

This chapter describes and explores variables that contribute to the accuracy of speaker identification and earwitness memory. An examination is made of (1) the history of voice identification in the courts; (2) differences between earwitness memory and eyewitness memory; (3) why speakers are difficult to identify; (4) a review of different witness/suspect factors and situational factors; (5) investigative procedures that play a role in earwitness memory; and finally, (6) some recommended procedures and guidelines for the administration of voice lineups.
