ABSTRACT
When people speak with one another, they frequently do not literally mean what they say. For example, someone might refer to a curvy road as a snake, or suggest that a mutual friend has let the cat out of the bag. Even though a speaker is not literally referring to snakes, cats, or bags, few listeners would have difficulties in figuring out the intended meanings of such statements.
