ABSTRACT

The purposes of the panel discussion that provided the material for this chapter were to address areas in which Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) methods and models are currently applied in the aviation industry and to identify future applications in which the NDM perspective may contribute to system performance and safety. We chose not to focus on a single dimension of the industry, but to assemble a panel that represented a wide variety of interests and perspectives including: military, commercial, and general aviation; flight-crew performance in fixed and rotary-wing aircraft; air traffic control and flight dispatch; training; and decision aiding. Panel members included: Judith Orasanu (NASA-Ames Research Center), George L. Kaempf (Klein Associates Inc.), Marvin Cohen (Cognitive Technologies, Inc.), Alan Stokes (Florida Institute of Technology), Andrew Lacher (Mitre Corporation), and Carolyn Prince (Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division).
