ABSTRACT

Consistent with the conference on which it is based and the one that preceded it, this book constitutes a status report on an endeavor known as naturalistic decision making (NDM). The ensuing chapters are written, by and large, by individuals whose work is giving definition and direction to this endeavor. Most of them are applied scientists who found the substantial existing literature on human judgment and decision making unsatisfactory for addressing their particular system design or training needs and went looking for a different approach. Each arrived at NDM by a somewhat different route and sees it in somewhat different terms. Like the proverbial elephant, therefore, NDM is the composite of a number of narrower perspectives.
