ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses from the outset, L's use of interclause relations to express causality required the ability to integrate language, thought, and social understanding. It divides into two main sections. First, it presents a theoretical and developmental overview of L's acquisition of because and so. It discusses two current concepts from developmental psychology, intersubjectivity and decontextualization that provide a theoretical perspective for the ideas. Next, it describes and illustrate the emergence of because and so in L's language production. In the second section, it proposes three general insights about the emergence of causal interclause relations that were derived from the developmental overview. The emergence of because and so in L's language production demonstrates three basic insights about causal connectives that are highlighted in the in vivo developmental process. Thus, the data from L are a source of developmental insight that is not apparent from adul's competent language production.
