ABSTRACT

Head injuries have been around since the beginning of life on this planet and, contrary to what people want to believe, are not 20th-century phenomena. Ancient forebearers knew devastation and functional changes after head injury. Some of the oldest known writings dealing with surgical topics in the 17th century B.C. describe treatment for head injuries (Wilkins, 1985). Throughout the centuries, lay and professional observations and treatment of head injuries have occurred, accelerating during wartime.
