ABSTRACT

A parable relates the story of a Zen monk who is chased to the edge of a cliff by tigers. The monk is cornered at a cliff face, and, scanning the cliff for some means of escape, he. spies a vine and begins climbing down the cliff. After descending about halfway, he ventures a look down, and discovers that there are two tigers waiting for him at the bottom. Looking upward in hopes that the tigers above have departed, he sees that not only are the tigers still there, but the vine he is climbing is fraying as it rubs against the cliff face. Just then, he notices a big, ripe strawberry within arm's reach. He plucks it, and enjoys the last, best-tasting strawberry of his life.
