ABSTRACT

This volume illustrates that there are many theoretical interpretations of consciousness. In this chapter we propose a framework for the interpretation of consciousness in which it serves a critical function of modulating cognitive processing in a hybrid architecture (Schneider & Detweiler, 1987). We also interpret the chapters by Shiffrin (chapter 3, this volume) and Jacoby, Yonelinas, and Jennings (chapter 2, this volume) in the context of this framework.
